Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP now supports NVMe-over-TCP for simpler, lower-latency shared block storage

Jul 9, 2024

Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP, a fully managed AWS storage service based on NetApp ONTAP and built for business-critical workloads has added support for NVMe-over-TCP (NVMe/TCP), a new block storage access capability. This option provides customers with lower latency and simplified multipath I/O (MPIO) configuration for highly available storage access from compute servers.

NVMe/TCP is an implementation of the NVMe protocol that transports data over TCP using traditional Ethernet as a fabric. Customers can now run block storage workloads like databases and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) using NVMe/TCP, incurring lower latency compared to traditional iSCSI block storage and easily configure highly available storage access relative to iSCSI.

NVMe/TCP is available on all second-generation Amazon FSx for ONTAP file systems in all AWS Regions where they’re available. To learn more, visit the FSx for ONTAP user guide.
